Today I started volunteering at Trillium Hospital.
It was scary this morning when I woke up. Besides it being my first day, it was my first day to ride a bus. Up until now I have always had my own car. But living in a city, (and because an extra parking spot would be about $100 a month, not to mention insurance and gas) we only have one car. Down the line when I can work, we will look into getting another car.
Anyways, I had my route all planned out and I knew when I needed to be at the bus spot and where I was getting off. I called the bus help line this morning just to get a feel of where the money goes when you get on the bus? I know it sounds like a stupid question, but I had no idea and I did not want to walk on looking clueless.
So I made it there and back all by myself. I was rather proud of the event, yah 31 and riding the bus for the first time (the school bus does not count).
But the hospital was great! I am in the Cardiac department and I helped file and helped make phone calls confirming appointments. It was fun calling people and actually getting to reach out to people. I know that I am going to enjoy this new role of mine and it was nice to have a goal for the day!
I loved it, I cannot wait until next week!
Today I had training at the hospital for my volunteer position. It was so much fun! I am so excited to be apart of a great team!
John took a picture of me in my new fun scrubs. Nice, eh? I do not have all the specifics yet on what I will be doing. But I know that I will be in a cardiac unit! I will keep everyone posted when I get more details.
Last week I finally got a call from the local hospital that I contacted to volunteer. They had a long application to fill out and I needed to get 2 references from people that I had worked with. Luckily all the friends I contacted were more than happy to fill something out for me. After I submitted everything it took a month before I got a call. I was so incredibly excited!
John drove me to the interview and had a coffee in the hospital while I had the interview. She asked me a lot of questions about why I wanted to volunteer. I told her that I always wanted to be a nurse but when I found out how long the waiting list was in Utah I decided to go into business, never quite forgetting about health care as something I would still be interested in. Since then I had never had the time to volunteer, so I am so excited that I have so much free time now!
She told me about the openings they had and I chose something in the cardiac department helping out at the front desk greeting patients, filing, just all around office work. I will be working on Wednesdays from 1-4pm. After I get used to everything I will expand my work to 2 days a week. But I want to start out slowly.
I have training in two weeks, and I am getting a TB test today. Fun! It is one of the requirements, but I am not sure if I am looking forward to it. I will let you know how it goes!
